Zane Ally photographs the American everyday the way few others do. His eye is sharp, revealing, and quietly ironic — but never without tenderness. He works from the periphery: the cul-de-sac, the motel corridor, the parking lot at dusk, the fenced-in backyard swallowed by fog.
Working in both color and black-and-white, on film, Ally moves between the documentary and the uncanny. A pair of sneakers, a rock balanced on a traffic barrel, legs dangling from a rooftop — the ordinary detail becomes the subject, and the familiar starts to look strange.
The pictures ask questions they don't answer. Taken together, they form a kind of record — of a place, a moment, a way of looking — that is at once documentary, story, and something else entirely.
